Following a big fire over Ullswater on Saturday night, the public has once again called for the prohibition of disposable barbecues.
Crews from Penrith, Patterdale, Keswick, and Appleby were dispatched to fight the fire, with some remaining on the site until 7 a.m. on Sunday.
The fire broke out in the Knotts Hill neighbourhood of Watermillock and took four appliances, two wildfire units, and a water bowser to put out.
According to Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, the fire was sparked by a discarded disposable barbeque.
Open fires and barbecues are not permitted anywhere in the Lake District.
Barbecues and open flames are discouraged by the Lake District National Park Authority because they are a fire hazard and environmentally destructive, endanger animals, and frequently result in garbage being left behind.
“Major landowners agreed to prohibit visitors from having barbecues or fires on their land to help care for our national park,” it read. Please keep this particular area in mind and leave no trace.”
Another option would be to discourage every shop in The Lake District to take these items off sale. In our opinion, they are far too easily available.
