The Graves family welcomed ‘The Borrowdale Hotel’ into their unique group of 6 Lake District Hotels in 2008. Since then, the hotel has been transformed by ongoing refurbishments, remaining sympathetic to its character and allowing tradition and personality to pervade – like the original 41 room bells that hang in the hall.
The comfortable lounges invite you to relax and enjoy a rest after a day on the fells or a boat trip from Keswick – perhaps with a spot of afternoon tea or a drink before dinner. The elegantly contemporary look, marrying oak panels with modern furnishings of the lounge bar create a welcoming space, to enjoy morning coffees, lunches, afternoon teas and early evening bar meals. Step into the bright conservatory which looks out to the historic Victorian veranda and pretty gardens while the fells beyond provide the perfect vista for relaxed informal eating. Later in the evening it’s somewhere you can enjoy a pre-dinner drink and after dinner coffee with petit fours and perhaps a brandy in front of the roaring fire.
The elegant dining room also features glass fronted doors which entice guests into the wine tasting cellar that boasts a comprehensive wine list.
The Borrowdale Hotel has a rich history that dates back to 1866 when it was built as one of the first coaching inns in the Borrowdale valley. It quickly became a favourite among visitors to the Lake District and has remained so ever since.
Over the years, the hotel has undergone several changes of ownership, but it has always retained its charm and character. In 2008, the Graves family bought the hotel and started a new era in its history. They have worked hard to maintain the hotel’s traditional feel while also modernising it to meet the needs of today’s guests.
Despite the changes that have taken place, many of the hotel’s original features still exist, including the old bells opposite the reception desk, which were used to summon staff to attend to guests’ needs.
The hotel has welcomed many famous guests over the years, including H.R.H. Prince Arthur, The Prince of Wales, and other leading members of British nobility. It has also played a role in the local community, with the school at Stonethwaite being built in 1873 and replaced in 1968 by a new school built by the grandsons of the original builder, Hodgsons of Keswick.
