The remote, slate-grey settlement of Patterdale, nestled between two mountain ranges, can only be reached by Kirkstone pass to the south or along Ullswater to the north. Legend has it that in the 5th century, while marooned on Duddon Sands, St. Patrick trekked 30 miles overland to this valley, giving it the ancient name of St. Patricks dale.
True or not, there is a spring by the roadside dedicated to the saint at Glenridding, and the charming village church was erected and called St. Patrick’s in 1853.
Patterdale Hall was erected in 1796 for John Mounsey, the so-called “King of Patterdale” and renowned miser.
Patterdale now has barely changed, with only a few dwellings, The White Lion pub, The Patterdale Hotel, the local school, the fire station, and the church remaining.
