Milky Way Over a Lake District Lake

From spectacular night skies and guided forest walks to a free cosmic exhibition at Rheged, autumn 2026 is a wonderful time to discover a different side of the Lake District.

The Lake District is famous for its mountains, lakes and beautiful scenery, but some of its most memorable sights appear after sunset. The Cumbria Dark Skies Festival runs from 23 October to 20 November 2026, with astronomy experiences, guided night walks and family-friendly activities across the county. Meanwhile, Cosmic Cumbria is at Rheged near Penrith from 23 October 2026 to 8 February 2027.

Cumbria Dark Skies Festival 2026: What’s Happening?

Beyond the bright lights of towns and cities, parts of Cumbria offer rewarding views of stars and constellations. The festival brings together different organisations and venues for guided stargazing, night-time woodland walks, astronomy experiences and activities for families and beginners.

Some events are free, while others require advance booking. Check the Cumbria Dark Skies Festival information for the latest programme.

Cosmic Cumbria: A Free Exhibition at Rheged

23 October 2026 – 8 February 2027 | Rheged, near Penrith

Cosmic Cumbria explores the night sky through astrophotography and interactive displays. Created with the Eden Valley and Penrith Astronomy Group, the exhibition takes visitors on a journey from Earth through the Solar System and beyond. Bring a charged mobile phone if you would like to make use of the interactive elements.

Rheged also advertises special astronomy-related activities around the opening period, including a launch evening on 23 October and an Ask an Astronomer event on 31 October. Check times, prices and booking requirements directly with the venue before visiting.

Find out more on Rheged’s exhibition page.

Experience the Stars at Grizedale Observatory

Situated in Grizedale Forest between Windermere and Coniston, Grizedale Observatory and Planetarium offers an introduction to astronomy. Telescope sessions can provide a closer look at the night sky when conditions permit, while the planetarium provides an indoor alternative when clouds get in the way.

See the Grizedale Observatory information for upcoming sessions and booking details.

Take a Dark Skies Walk at Whinlatter Forest

For those who enjoy exploring on foot, Whinlatter Forest near Keswick has an organised Dark Skies Walk scheduled for Thursday 29 October 2026 at 6pm. The guided outing explores woodland trails after dark, with opportunities to enjoy the night sky when weather permits.

Forest paths may be wet, uneven or muddy. Check the route, age requirements, clothing advice and availability before booking. See Forestry England’s event details.

Where Can You Go Stargazing in the Lake District?

You don’t always need an organised event to enjoy the stars. Quieter locations away from streetlights can be rewarding on clear nights. Grizedale Forest and Whinlatter Forest offer organised astronomy or after-dark activities, while rural valleys may have darker skies than town centres.

Always check parking, access arrangements and closing times. A location that is accessible in daylight may not be suitable after dark.

Tips for Planning a Stargazing Evening

  • Check the forecast: clear skies give you the best chance of seeing stars.
  • Dress warmly: autumn evenings can become cold quickly.
  • Take a torch: a red-light mode can help preserve night vision.
  • Choose a safe route: avoid unfamiliar mountain paths after dark.
  • Book early: guided walks and observatory sessions can have limited spaces.
  • Allow travel time: rural roads can be narrow and dark.

Make a Weekend of It

Combine an evening beneath the stars with daytime sightseeing. Explore Keswick and Derwentwater before a night walk at Whinlatter, or visit Rheged before discovering Ullswater and the surrounding countryside.
