Smithy Beck Bridge Closure in Ennerdale from 10 November 2026: Walking Diversions
Walkers, cyclists and horse riders planning to explore Ennerdale in November should be aware of a temporary closure at Smithy Beck Bridge. Forestry England is replacing the bridge, with access restrictions scheduled to begin on Tuesday 10 November 2026. The Lake District National Park Authority expects the physical closure to last less than one week, although its legal temporary order allows a longer period if necessary.
- Planned start: Tuesday 10 November 2026
- Affected route: Bridleway 407021 at Smithy Beck Bridge and the forest road to the east of the crossing
- Expected works: less than one week (subject to progress)
- Walkers: alternative route available using an established walking trail, footbridge and forest roads
- Cyclists: use the alternative only while dismounted
- Horse riders, mobility scooters and pushchairs: no suitable alternative provided

Where is Smithy Beck Bridge and what is closing?
Smithy Beck is in the Ennerdale valley in the western Lake District, an area of forest tracks, woodland paths and remote fell country. The temporary order covers the bridge crossing on Bridleway 407021 and the associated forest road immediately to the east. The bridge replacement is being carried out by Forestry England.
The order was announced as a change on 29 October 2026. Its maximum legal duration should not be confused with the expected construction timetable: the authority anticipates actual work lasting under a week, but weather and site conditions may alter this.
What diversion is available for walkers and cyclists?
The official plan identifies the pedestrian diversion as A–C–B. It follows an established walking trail, uses another footbridge over the beck and returns via forest roads. Cyclists may use this alternative only when dismounted.
Importantly, the authority states that no suitable alternative route is available for horses, mobility scooters or pushchairs. If you depend on step-free access or need to ride through the crossing, choose another outing or postpone until access has been restored.
This article does not replace the diversion map. Follow on-site signs and consult the official order and map before setting off; do not attempt to cross a closed bridge or enter the works area.
Does this affect the Smithy Beck walking trail?
Forestry England describes its waymarked Smithy Beck trail as an easy, roughly two-mile walk from Bowness Knott car park. Because the bridge works affect a crossing in the same area, visitors should check current Forestry England notices and signs to determine which parts of their intended walk remain accessible. An easy trail description does not guarantee an unobstructed route during construction.
Another planned Ennerdale closure: Anglers’ Crag
There is a separate temporary order for the path near Anglers’ Crag on the southern shore of Ennerdale Water. Repairs to a collapsed revetment and erosion damage are expected to require around six weeks of restrictions sometime between mid-November 2026 and the end of March 2027.
The exact active six-week period has not been established, so the full winter window should not be described as a continuous closure. The authority’s plan identifies an alternative along rights of way around the northern side of Ennerdale Water (points E–F). This may be substantially longer than a short outing; check suitability before committing.
Planning a visit to Ennerdale this winter
Ennerdale offers peaceful lakeside scenery and forest walking, but it is a remote valley where daylight, winter weather and access restrictions can all affect a route.
