Muncaster Castle is a historic building located in the western Lake District near the small coastal town of Ravenglass in Cumbria, England. The castle, which is privately owned by the Pennington family, has a rich history that dates back to the 13th century. It is built on the site of an earlier Roman fort and has been the family’s ancestral home for more than 800 years.
The castle is well-known for its beautiful gardens, which include a Himalayan garden, a rhododendron collection, and an impressive collection of azaleas. The grounds also feature a Hawk and Owl Centre, which showcases various birds of prey and offers daily flying displays.
Muncaster Castle is rumored to be haunted, with several reported ghost sightings and paranormal occurrences. The most famous ghost is that of Tom Fool, or Thomas Skelton, who was a jester at the castle in the 16th century. His mischievous spirit is said to roam the castle and grounds, causing mischief and playing tricks on visitors.
The castle is open to the public for guided tours, allowing visitors to explore its fascinating history, architecture, and stunning surroundings. There are also a variety of seasonal events and activities, such as Halloween ghost tours, Christmas events, and outdoor theater performances during the summer months.
Muncaster Castle is a popular tourist destination in the Lake District and offers a unique and captivating experience for visitors interested in history, architecture, and the paranormal.

The visitor to Muncaster today will find 77 acres of the most tranquil historic gardens in Cumbria; with a blend of cultivated areas, lawns and woodlands together with play areas and the Enchanted Trail for our smaller visitors, there is always a quiet corner even on busier days and miles of paths and fascinating vistas to discover and explore.
Although wonderful to explore at any time of year, spring is when Muncaster’s gardens are at their best and the month of May is the peak of the flowering season. Don’t expect neat borders and regimented ranks of bedding plants; this wild, woodland garden will surprise and delight with banks of colour cascading down the hillsides and ravines surrounding the Castle.
Flowering camellias, magnolias and native wild daffodils abound in March but as April turns to May, rhododendrons and azaleas are a riot of colour throughout the gardens. If you are visting Cumbria during this time, the gardens are an attraction not to be missed. We are dog friendly too.
Ruskin named the view across Muncaster’s gardens to the fells beyond as the ‘Gateway to Paradise’ – praise indeed! Come and explore our corner of paradise for yourself.
Please note that our site is in a wild and hilly location so sturdy footwear is recommended and please ask for advice at the ticket offices about paths suitable for baby buggies, wheelchairs and mobility scooters.
The Hawk & Owl Centre within the gardens of Muncaster Castle is open daily Easter to early November and at weekends Nov-Dec & Feb-Easter. The Centre and the inspiring flying displays are included in your ticket.
The Centre comprises the lawned Owl Garden with aviaries and mews, plus the adjacent Old Rose Garden where there is a flying arena. The Centre is home to a diverse range of birds for you to wonder at and enjoy, from massive to minute and bizarre to familiar but all rarely seen up-close.
Entry to the Centre is through the Owl Garden Tearoom where you can pick up drinks and snacks, and a range of bird-and wildlife-oriented giftware.

You can see our birds in their aviaries in the centre. There are information boards about each one to help you learn more about them but our bird team are on hand to answer any questions you may have.
All of our birds have a role in our flying displays so depending on the time of day, please note that you may find that a number of them are absent from the Centre.
We strongly suggest that you time your visit to see one or more of our sensational bird of prey displays, at weekends in winter, twice daily in the main season, and the wild heron feed too.
