Looking for a free, interesting way to explore Windermere’s western shore? The National Trust’s Wray Grounds Tour – Walk & Talk is a 45-minute guided outdoor walk exploring the history of Wray Castle and its lakeside estate.
Selected tours continue until 17 December 2026, making this a worthwhile addition to an autumn or early winter Lake District itinerary.
What happens on the Wray Walk & Talk?
Starting on the front terrace of Wray Castle, a National Trust team member leads visitors around key points near the castle. You’ll hear how the Dawson family developed the estate, learn about notable visitors and discover plans for Wray’s future.
It’s an introduction to the estate’s history, not an indoor castle tour. After the talk, you can explore waymarked paths, woodland and the lakeshore at your own pace.

Where to meet
Meet by the Walk & Talk sign on the front terrace of Wray Castle, at least five minutes before the advertised start time.
Address: Wray, Low Wray, Ambleside, Cumbria, LA22 0JA.
Wray is on the western shore of Windermere, with woodland walks, lakeside views and historic estate features to explore.
Is the walk accessible?
The outdoor route uses hard-standing, loose-slate paths and normally includes steps. Staff can adjust the route to avoid the steps without losing the tour content. The tour is Tramper accessible, with arrangements available through Outdoor Mobility. There are no seated rest places along the tour.
Dogs are welcome on a short lead. Wear comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing, as the talk takes place outdoors.
Can you go inside Wray Castle?
The castle interior is closed during refurbishment, so this guided experience takes place in the grounds rather than inside the building. Visitors can still enjoy the estate’s paths, lakeshore and outdoor features, subject to current access arrangements.
Make a day of it at Wray
After the guided walk, explore the arboretum, walled garden, boathouse and miniature harbour, or follow the paths towards Windermere’s shingle shoreline. The estate is a good choice for visitors who enjoy gentle walks, local history and lake views.
Parking charges apply: the National Trust currently lists £7 for two hours, £8.50 for four hours or £10 for the day. Check the latest rates and opening times before you travel.
Stay around Windermere
If you’re visiting from further afield, why not take a short break? Accommodation around Windermere and Ambleside provides a convenient base for Wray, the lakeshore and other Lake District attractions.

Plan your visit
For the latest dates, access arrangements and visitor facilities, consult the National Trust Wray visitor page. Because the tour depends on staffing, it’s best to check on arrival rather than assume it will run.
