Event details

When: 29 & 30 October 2026, 5.30pm–7pm (arrive 5.15pm)
Venue: Lanty Slee's Langdale (Sticklebarn)

Fancy a different sort of Halloween half-term adventure? Join National Trust rangers in Great Langdale for an early-evening wildlife walk on 29 or 30 October 2026. With bat detectors to help you listen for activity after dark, this is a family-friendly way to discover another side of the Lake District.

When are the Langdale bat walks?

There are two sessions: Thursday 29 October and Friday 30 October 2026, each running from 5.30pm to approximately 7pm. Please arrive by 5.15pm at the Hayloft upstairs at Lanty Slee’s Langdale (Sticklebarn), Great Langdale.

What happens on the evening?

The ranger team starts with a family-friendly introduction to bats, then takes the group outdoors to look and listen for nocturnal wildlife using bat detectors. As well as bats, you might hear an owl or other creatures moving in the darkness. A hot drink per person is included.

How much are tickets?

  • Ages 16 and over: £15 per person.
  • Under 16s: Free, accompanied by an adult.

Advance booking is essential. Check availability and book directly with the National Trust.

What should you bring?

Wear warm layers, waterproof clothing and suitable footwear, and take a headtorch. Rangers may ask visitors to turn off lights at certain points to avoid disturbing wildlife. The outdoor event is expected to go ahead in most weather.

Accessibility and getting there

The upstairs Hayloft introduction is not currently accessible for disabled visitors, but the outdoor bat-detecting section can accommodate disabled visitors with arrangements made in advance. Contact the National Trust Langdale team on 0344 249 1895 to discuss your needs. Check parking arrangements before setting off for Great Langdale.
