Lake District Agricultural Shows

Agricultural shows in the Lake District are a vital part of Cumbria’s rural life. These events attract locals and tourists, boosting the economy and celebrating farming traditions. During the pandemic, many of these shows took a three-year break, but now they have resumed, drawing large crowds eager to experience the best of the Cumbrian countryside.

From June, several shows have been held across various locations such as Ulverston and Penrith. These events offer a rich variety of activities, making them a highlight of the summer and autumn seasons. Visitors can expect to see a wide range of livestock classes including cattle, sheep, pigs, alpacas, goats, light horses, and even poultry. These shows are also famous for their dog competitions, featuring breeds like foxhounds and terriers.

Traditional sports and entertainment are key features of these agricultural fairs. Events like Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling, hound trails, and fell races add a competitive edge. Younger visitors and families can enjoy fairground rides, market stalls, and food stands. Agricultural shows are an excellent opportunity for local produce vendors, offering everything from artisanal cheeses to handcrafted items. Notably, the Westmorland County Show, one of the UK’s largest and oldest shows, dates back to 1799 and is often compared to the Glastonbury Festival for its scale and significance.
