Jamie and Jenna Shail, hoteliers and restaurateurs, have designed a brand-new luxury guest room concept called The Pavilion at their Lake District hideaway, Rothay Manor in Ambleside.
The pair collaborated with primary architect Ben Cunliffe, proprietor of renowned Cumbrian architectural practise BCA, which specialises in building creative, beautiful, and sustainable architecture.
Jamie and Jenna collaborated with interior designer Matt Hulme, head of Dynargh Design, whose Cornish-based firm has already worked on several sections of the main structure at Rothay, including the refurbishment of the café and the Fairfield suite, to define the space’s interiors.
J.T. Construction, located in Carnforth, completed the construction work. They have previously worked on other prominent projects in the hospitality sector around the region, including earlier work for Gilpin Hotel & Lake House and Lindeth Howe.
The destruction of a historic cottage in the hotel’s large gardens kicked off the project in early 2020. This work permitted the construction of a new entry to Rothay Manor from the main road, the construction of a new guest car park and the provision of room for the new building’s footprint. After nearly two years of hard labour by everyone involved, a pandemic, and numerous severe storms, The Pavilion is officially complete and welcome visitors.
The Pavilion is a modern structure made of natural materials that reflects many features of the surrounding area. There are eight magnificent guest apartments on the inside. Each suite is uniquely built, with gigantic bedrooms, distinct seating / leisure spaces, and ultra-stylish en-suite bathrooms. The interior décor is inspired by a natural colour palette, with colours and tones drawn from the surrounding fells, fields, and woodlands, merging classic country home style with rich mid-century details inspired by some of our historic private members clubs.
There are four Pavilion Garden Suites on the ground level of the structure. These enormous suites have super-king / twin beds, wide comfortable lounge spaces, and bathrooms with separate free-standing bathtubs, walk-in monsoon showers, and double sinks. Buttermere has a huge private garden with its own isolated hot tub, making it the ideal spot to unwind. Private courtyard gardens with direct access to the hotel’s main gardens are available at Grisedale, Blelham, and Esthwaite. All of the accommodations welcome dogs, and Blelham is totally accessible.
The Pavilion Junior Suites are located on the first floor and have lovely views of the hotel’s grounds. These suites have a super-king or twin bed, a wide seating area and a magnificent bathroom with a free-standing bath, a monsoon shower and twin sinks. Moss Eccles offers views of Ambleside as well as the huge grounds. Easedale and Codale have Juliet balconies and garden views, while Crummock has dual aspect views and a big private balcony with spectacular views of Wansfell Pike.

For obvious reasons, this compromised our projected timetable, but owing to the efforts of everyone involved, we were able to actualize our ambitious ambitions and complete the project. We are all really happy of what we have accomplished; it has taken a lot of hard work to pull everything together, but it has been well worth it, and we are confident that our visitors will sincerely appreciate what we have accomplished in constructing The Pavilion.”
