New Fell Route

Attention all nature lovers, ramblers, and hiking enthusiasts! The Lake District has exciting news to make your adventures even more memorable. Following a generous investment of £324,000, the iconic fell pathway, Breasthigh Road, near Tebay, has been wonderfully restored and upgraded.

Having embarked on this rejuvenation journey in May 2022, the path was spruced up just in time for the summer season. Stretching a scenic almost two miles (3km), this path forms a picturesque link between Bretherdale and Borrowdale.

Enhancements to the trail encompassed the introduction of new culverts, the establishment of two spanking new bridges, and meticulous repairs to rectify erosion damage. All these efforts have been orchestrated to provide you with an impeccable and safe walking experience.

This commendable endeavour was made possible thanks to a grant obtained by the Lake District National Park Authority (LDNPA) through the National Grid’s Landscape Enhancement Initiative. While the pathway was officially reopened to the public in May, Richard Leafe, the authority’s chief executive, proudly shared these developments with members recently.

Furthermore, the investment empowered the authority’s rangers to collaborate with local experts, ensuring the path’s track was not only repaired but also resurfaced and its drainage reinstated. And for those who appreciate a touch of green, Mr Leafe highlighted the “additional tree planting along the picturesque slopes of Borrowdale Fell”.

So, whether you’re a passionate rambler or someone just looking for a serene escapade amidst nature, the newly revamped Breasthigh Road awaits you with its unmatched beauty and improved accessibility. Happy hiking!
