Langdale Chase on the shores of Windermere has earned one of the highest honours in British hospitality, receiving the AA Inspectors’ Choice Five Red Stars for 2026/27. The AA announced the distinction at the AA Hospitality Awards in London on 21 September 2026, placing the Lake District hotel among a small group of newly recognised properties.
What do five AA Red Stars mean?
Five Red Stars are different from a standard five-star hotel rating. The AA’s Inspectors’ Choice recognition is reserved for exceptional hotels that stand out for the overall quality of their guest experience. Langdale Chase had already secured its five-star classification in 2024; the latest award represents a further step up.
A historic hotel with a new lease of life
The Grade II-listed Victorian country house has welcomed guests since 1891. After a major restoration, it reopened in November 2023. Today, its lakeside setting, landscaped gardens and carefully restored interiors make it a distinctive option for a special occasion or luxury Lake District break.
The property has around 30 bedrooms and suites, a restaurant recognised with two AA Rosettes, and an Art Deco-inspired bar. Guests can also enjoy afternoon tea, views across Windermere and, subject to availability and seasonal arrangements, trips aboard the hotel’s restored motor yacht Albatros.
Why it matters for the Lake District
The award is another reminder that the region offers much more than walking holidays and outdoor adventure. For visitors planning an anniversary, romantic weekend or memorable winter escape, the Lakes also have internationally competitive luxury accommodation.
